Intergenerational Gardening at Mill Gardens Sheltered Housing Scheme
Eden Housing Association aims to increase activity within communities to develop social contacts and awareness between the generations. As part of this work the Community Development Team encouraged young people to join the residents of Mill Gardens, Kirkby Stephen, to make some hanging baskets and rejuvenate some existing pots.
 
All participants gained knowledge and a new perspective of the people in their community, helping everyone to value and respect each other.  The project showed the young people that they had made a positive contribution to the environment and the residents lives, who can enjoy the flowers for the summer months.
 
Emily Sowerby, resident said “I don’t get out a great deal so it has been lovely to watch the young people busy planting, I have had such a smashing time.”
 
Bryony Keefe, young person said “My Grandma lives here so I am pleased we have made it nicer for her and all the other older people.”
