Rampkin House Extra Care
Extra Care for our very Sheltered Housing Scheme
Rampkin House at Appleby is our Extra Care Sheltered Housing Scheme – it provides an alternative to residential care and tries to maintain the highest level of independence possible. The support is provided in a discreet and sensitive manner within the individual's own home setting. A full time Supported Housing Officer is on duty each day from 8.30am to support, advise and monitor health and welfare. They also make referrals for tenants to access extra services as and when required. Extra Care needs are met by the on-site Care Team who are on hand 24 hours a day to support personal tasks such as bathing, dressing, cooking and meal provision. They are also on hand through the night to respond to emergencies and night time care.
Who is eligible to live at the scheme?
The extra care scheme is available to any individual who meets the Adult Social Care criteria for residential care. Referrals come from Adult Social Care backed through needs assessment. Generally available for people over 55 but priority is given to applicants at risk of being placed in residential care or a nursing home setting.
How do I access the scheme?
Initial approaches to Adult Social Care can be made by family, GP, Carer or Community Nurse. A Social Worker then visits and discusses as part of an assessment. If it is agreed that you meet the criteria, a Social Worker will assist in the completion of an application form and supporting letter to Eden Housing Association. Your application will be held on a list until a flat becomes available – allocation is based on assessment of current housing situation and living conditions.
What does it cost?
All tenants pay a basic rent for the flat, plus a property service charge for communal areas. There is also a personal support charge for the services provided by the Supported Housing Officer and associated costs. All flat running costs are met by tenants (eg Council tax, water rates, electricity, phone).
Can I get help to meet these costs?
Applications to Eden District Council can be made for assistance with rent and property charges through the housing benefit scheme. If tenants qualify for Housing Benefit, then an application is made to Supporting People in Cumbria for assistance to meet personal support charges. If you do not qualify for Housing Benefit you can apply to Supporting People in Cumbria for a financial assessment to be undertaken under the Fairer Charging Policy.
Your social worker can advise regarding financial assessments. If you would like more information on Extra Care, then please contact Liz Harrison, Community Support Officer on 01768 861453.
