What is extra care housing?
Extra care housing is a new modern model of care. It consists of a collection of flats or bungalows located on one development, allowing residents to live independently in their own home.
In Carlisle the Heysham Gardens and Heysham Meadows development is a unique mix of homes for rent, shared ownership and outright sale. All homes include a kitchen/living space, bathroom and two bedrooms - allowing family to stay. The rooms have also been designed to accommodate wheel chair access and grab rails fitted where they are needed to make living independently that bit easier.
The main core of the development is made up of apartments, linked centrally to the communal areas. This main building is called Heysham gardens and also includes a specailly adpated bathroom.
There are also communal facilities, including a treatment room, a café area and space for activities for those who choose to become involved with other residents and the local community.
Support is provided by an on-site care team and Careline tailored to meet residents’ needs.
At Heysham Gardens Julia Radford is the Scheme Co-ordinator - she is already working with groups in the community who are interested in getting involved when the scheme opens.
