Rural Housing Enabler Service

Eden Housing Association is working in partnership with ACT to help rural communities get affordable housing built. In Cumbria the DEFRA funded Rural Housing Enabling service covers Westmorland and Furness and Cumberland, including the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales (Westmorland Dales) National Park areas.

The aim of the service is to ensure that small rural communities benefit from the appropriate development of new affordable homes. Target communities are those with fewer than 3000 people and developments are likely to be for around ten homes or fewer. We know that these developments are vital for sustaining rural community services and schools, as well as providing much needed homes for key workers and young families.

How Rural Housing Enablers can help you…

The Rural Housing Enablers service offers free, impartial advice.

This includes step-by-step guidance to plan and deliver high-quality affordable housing that meets the needs of communities and fits in with the local environment. Often this will mean exploring Rural Exception Sites – those which have not been suggest for development in the local plan, but which would only be considered for the development of affordable housing by the Planning authority.
